In higher education, we’ve seen an unprecedented increase in laws and regulations that govern everything from the way we handle student data to how we process credit card information. At first we addressed compliance regulation by regulation, but this inefficient model resulted in conflicts between the guidance issued by various areas and was also confusing for employees, who must comply with multiple regulations. In a recent presentation with my colleagues Merri Beth Lavagnino and Tom Davis of Indiana University, we provided an overview of the major compliance issues facing higher education and described an approach to building and maintaining an effective compliance program.
